Leaves are used fresh, cooked, or dried and stored for a protein source. It is a fast growing tree, which can be trimmed to keep at shrub height in a garden with limited space. Actions: antibiotic, anti-fatigue, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestive, and tonic.

Yam, Greater Asiatic (Dioscorea alata), also called Winged Yam as the stem is square with ‘wings’ at each corner. It is a twining plant which likes to climb over a fence or trellis (or 3 stakes in the ground would provide something for its winged stems to climb over). It responds to manure and mulching and can be very productive, growing large underground tubers from 2 to 20 kg in weight. Towards the end of the growing season in autumn dark brown oval shaped aerial bulbils set on the above ground stems, and these can be used for propagating more plants and for eating cooked by steaming, roasting, making into chips, etc. Yams have a sweet nutty flavour. Bulbils and underground tubers, when dug, store well in a cool dry place for many weeks. Yams are a useful survival food plant. Vines go dormant to the ground over winter, and as they are a heavy producer of stems and leaves, we put them through the mulcher before they go dormant, and use the mulch on garden beds. This plant was featured on Gardening Australia in July 2010. For the plants many medicinal uses, go to http://www.stuartxchange.org/Ubi.html
4 bulbils of Yams $6 (regular price $7 for 1)
